I want to thank you for your support of Stehekin Heritage's position on the recent Upper Stehekin Road EA circulated by the National Park Service. I understand the time and energy involved in responding to the multitude of issues. Although the written responses were overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the road open, the National Park Service adopted Alternative B, the removal of the road.

The community of Stehekin is stunned by this action. No compromise or alternative action was discussed with the community. Action to remove the road was immediate by the National Park Service. Even while wildfire threatened to burn the valley and the official story was that they lacked resources to control the fire, crews were dispatched to tear out and helicopter out Dolly Varden Campground and the road culverts.

As a result, Stehekin Heritage is looking into possible actions available to us to reopen this road all the way to Cottonwood Camp. At present we are considering a multi-pronged approach and will be sending you more informational letters as we determine the best action to achieve what almost everyone who knows and loves this valley wants, to open the road.

I see this as a project that is going to take awhile and will need some funding to accomplish. Nobody enjoys spending their precious time and resources redirecting management to do what is mandated by legislative intent and by their own General Management Plan, but it needs to be done. Therefore I am asking that you consider supporting us in our action to reopen the upper Stehekin Valley Road.

Stehekin Heritage has maintained its 501-C3-tax status and all funds donated are tax deductible. We are appreciative and thank you for any help you can give.
